Innhold

The emphasis of the course is on theoretical and practical knowledge and skills related to scientific methodologies and methods, as well as scientific approaches, thinking and working methods and tools. The overall goal is to understand the research process from the formulation of a scientific problem to the dissemination of research project proposals to research results.

The main modules of the course are:

Module 1: Science and Research; The Scientific Method (with focus on the Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) disciplines)
Module 2: Purpose of Research; Problem Statement, Hypothesis, Research Objectives and Question(s)
Module 3: State of the Art and Literature Survey (search and analysis strategies, techniques, tools)
Module 4: Research Design, Scientific Methodologies and Methods (selected per discipline)
Module 5: Selected Data Collection Methods / Techniques for qualitative and quantitative evidence
Module 6: Selected Techniques for Data Analysis, Evaluation Metrics, Performance Validation and Evaluation
Module 7: Research Planning; Research Funding and Proposal
Module 8: Research Dissemination techniques and formats for the effective communication of research content through presentations and documents

Læringsutbytte

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to…

Critically analyse and distinguish foundational concepts, epistemologies and methodologies in science and engineering, with specific reference to the Computer Science domain.
Evaluate the structure, assumptions and limitations of scientific investigations in Computer Science.
Independently identify and formulate significant, researchable problems in Computer Science; design and justify an original research strategy that selects appropriate methodologies and anticipates limitations and risks.
Systematically synthesize and critically evaluate scholarly literature to determine state‑of‑the‑art knowledge, identify research gaps, and situate new research contributions within existing theoretical and empirical contexts.
Apply and adapt relevant theoretical models and qualitative and quantitative methods to complex Computer Science problems.
Produce a coherent, detailed research project plan (including objectives, methods, timeline and evaluation criteria) and present and defend the plan to specialist peers and supervisors.
Critically assess the ethical, legal and societal implications of Computer Science research (with particular attention to privacy, fairness and social responsibility).
Communicate complex scientific arguments, methods and results clearly and persuasively to specialist and non‑specialist audiences using established formats (e.g., research papers, technical reports, conference presentations), and respond to critical questioning.

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in AI and IoT and the master’s programme in Multimedia and Game Technologies.

Undervisnings- og læringsformer

This course includes lectures, exercises, group work, and compulsory assignments.

Generally, lectures and exercises are offered on-site on campus (UiA, Grimstad). The workload for the average student is approximately 200 hours. Details will be communicated via Canvas.
