International publishing

Knowledge

Candidates will:

• develop knowledge of the peer review process
• gain insight into the multidisciplinarity of the PhD programme and how researchers may view matters from different perspectives

Skills

Candidates will know how to:

• make an overview of the most important publication outlets for their PhD research, and a (preliminary) plan and publication strategy for their doctoral work.
• organize the work in the different phases of international publications (preparation, submission, revision and resubmission).

Competences

Candidates:

• have developed the ability for critical thinking, particularly with respect to the ethical aspects of international publishing (e.g. relationships with co-authors and the supervisor, ownership of data and ideas, research misconduct, open access and societal impacts).
• are able to start planning the international publication of some of their PhD work.

The course is compulsory for all candidates on the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

PhD candidates must each semester register for classes and examinations through Studentweb.

The deadline for registering is February 1st for courses in the spring semester and September 1st for courses in the autumn semester.

This course is only available for candidates admitted to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Oslo.

Lectures

Compulsory activities

• 75% attendance on both instruction days.
• Active participation is required.
• Approved compulsory attendance is valid for the next two semesters the course is offered.

Essay

The essay:

• will present an overview and discussion of the most important publication outlets (international journals and/or book publishers) that are relevant for the candidate’s PhD research.
• will seek to map important publication outlets in the student’s field of research, and discuss advantages and challenges of different publication strategies that will be followed during the course of the PhD.
• will be between 2000-5000 words. Cover page, abstract, illustrations and list of references come in addition.
• will have Times New Roman, font size 12, and a line and paragraph spacing of 1.5.
• For source references and quotations, please use a style template established for your own discipline.

You must pass the compulsory activities in order to hand in your essay.
