Research Communication

Knowledge

Candidates will:

• know the possibilities and limitations associated with various public-oriented communication channels and communication techniques
• have an understanding of the researcher`s and the journalist`s points of view at the intersection of journalism and science
• get insight into the ethical aspects of public oriented research communication
• gain insight into the multidisciplinarity of the PhD programme and how researchers may view matters from different perspectives

Skills

Candidates will:

• acquire sufficient journalistic knowledge to take a journalist`s point of view in various media cases
• have learnt about and practiced on being interviewed in TV, radio and newspapers
• be able to evaluate what medium is suitable for which matters, and which media channels they best can use to reach out with their message

Competences

Candidates:

• are able to reflect upon how they can use different media to focus on their own research or on research policy issues

The course is compulsory for all candidates on the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

PhD candidates must each semester register for classes and examinations through Studentweb.

The deadline for registering is February 1st for courses in the spring semester and September 1st for courses in the autumn semester.

This course is only available for candidates admitted to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Oslo.

Teaching and practical exercises.

Compulsory activites Attendance

• 75% attendance on both instruction days.
• Active participation.
• Approved compulsory attandance is valid for the next two semesters the course is offered.
• A student who has completed compulsory teaching and exercises and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat the teaching and exercises.
• A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory teaching and exercises or had these approved, is entitled to repeat the teaching and exercises, depending on available capacity.

Mandatory assignment before the course starts

The assignment:

• will be published in Canvas in August/September.
• must be uploaded in Canvas within the deadline, before the course starts.
• is intended as a starting point for an approximately 3-minute TV interview that is conducted during the course.

Failure to submit the mandatory assignment in time will result in loss of the right to participate in the course and to submit the final exam.

Submission of essay in Inspera

The essay:

• is a chronicle/op-ed to be published in a newspaper or on a website.
• can be 5000-7000 characters including spaces.
• is typed with a margin of 2.5 cm, line spacing of 1.5 and a Times New Roman 12-point font.
