Mandatory prerequisites for regular students.

MED4500 - module 5, Medicine

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In general, a student who fails an examination cannot progress in the programme until the examination has been passed. Students who re sit or take a postponed examination may continue to attend their courses until the examination results are announced, or, if applicable, until the result of the appeal has been confirmed. The student cannot continue the course, but will be transferred to retake the class, if a passing grade is not achieved.

If you have been absent from the study programme for two consecutive years or more, you may be required by the Faculty to repeat previously approved mandatory activities and/or exams.

Applies to regular students. Exchange students are admitted based on agreements with the partner university.

MED4500R - module 5, Medicine

Students who resit or take a postponed examination may continue to attend their courses until the examination results are announced, or, if applicable, until the result of an appeal has been confirmed. If a passing grade is not achieved, the student cannot continue the course, but will be transferred to retake the failed examination next semester.

If you have been absent from the study programme for two consecutive years or more, you may be required by the faculty to repeat previously approved mandatory activities and/or exams.

• Lectures, seminars, small group teaching, courses, labs and clinical practice. Full time study.
• Course materials in the course content pages, in My Studies and in Canvas may not be distributed or published without special permission from the owner of the copyright to the material.
• It is not possible to change groups once these are published. You will attend teaching with the group you have been assigned to throughout the module. The groups are published 7-10 days before the semester starts. Additional information is given in My Studies
• Attendance is recorded using a signature book in which the student and teacher must sign for attendance each time. It is the student's responsibility to obtain a signature from the teacher. Students must attend the teaching on time. Students who are late, leave before the end, or are only partially present, will not obtain approved attendance. The signature book must be submitted to the module coordinator no later than the Friday before the first exam.
• Students are expected to attend plenary sessions in person. Some of the teaching will be streamed. Only students present in allocated rooms in Ahus and Campus South can attend streamed teaching.
• The requirements for attending mandatory teaching is specified under each teaching activity. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, students lose the right to attend exam(s), and will be required to retake the mandatory teaching, regardless of reason.

Attendance requirements - Oslo

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

• Clinical small group teaching is mandatory. A total of 14 clinical small groups in obstetrics and gynaecology are held during this module: 5 times at the Labour Ward, 3 times at the Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic, 2 times at the Gynaecology Ward, 2 times at the Antenatal Outpatient Clinic, 1 time at the Gynaecology Outpatient Infertility Clinic and 1 time at Radiumhospitalet. The maximum permitted absence from mandatory small group teaching is 4 times.
• Specification of requirements: During the time in the Labour Ward the student must assist 3 deliveries and observe 1 caesarean section.
• The following courses are mandatory. The Introduction course, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, and the Summary course. The maximum permitted absence from mandatory courses is 1 time.

Paediatrics

• Clinical small group teaching is mandatory. A total of 10 clinical small groups in paediatrics are held during this module: 6 times at the Paediatric Ward, 3 times at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 1 time at the Voksentoppen Center for Asthma and Allergy. The maximum permitted absence from mandatory small group teaching is 3 times.
• The following 2 courses and the additional case meeting are mandatory: Introduction to Paediatrics and HLR course. Prior to the case meeting each student must complete 1 medical record, and the 3 other medical records must be completed before the announced deadline. The maximum permitted absence from the mandatory courses is 1 time.
• Specification of requirements: All students must complete 4 medical records (see above).

Global Health

• Presentation of group assignment in Global Health is mandatory. Students will be divided into groups and assigned a topic. The group must give a presentation on the given topic to their fellow students. A first draft of the presentation must be sent to the group's supervisor for comments, and a final version approved by the supervisor prior to the seminar. A short description of each student’s contribution to the presentation must be enclosed with the revised presentation.

Attendance requirements - Campus South

Unless otherwise specified, the requirements are similar for students at Campus South as for students in Oslo.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

• Clinical practice sessions are mandatory. A total of 13 sessions of clinical practice in obstetrics and gynaecology are held during this module. 2 sessions at the Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic, 1 session at the Abortion Outpatient Clinic and 1 at the Antenatal Outpatient Clinic. 5 sessions are held at the Labour Ward and 4 sessions at the Gynaecology Ward. The maximum permitted absence from the Gynaecology and Labour Wards is 1 time in Kristiansand and 1 time in Arendal. The maximum permitted absence from the Outpatient Clinics is 2 times.
• Additionally, there are 7 mandatory group sessions in obstetrics and gynaecology where the maximum permitted absence is 2 times.

Paediatrics

• Clinical practice sessions are mandatory. A total of 10 sessions of clinical practice in paediatrics are held during this module. 4 sessions are at the Paediatric Ward, 2 sessions at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 4 at the Paediatric Outpatient Clinic. The maximum permitted absences from mandatory clinical practice sessions is 1 in Kristiansand and 1 in Arendal.
• Additionally, there are 5 mandatory group sessions in paediatrics where the maximum permitted absence is 2 times.

Regarding the possibility to repeat completed mandatory teaching

Special teaching arrangements:

• Students with disabilities and students with special needs can apply for individual accommodations.

Please observe that the attendance requirements must be fulfilled in order to sit for Module 6 examinations.

Two examinations are held during Module 6. A pass for both the written examination and OSCE is required to pass Module 6 as a whole.

• A written examination in the subjects included in the module. Held as school examination. Duration 4 hours.
• An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in paediatrics, obstetrics/gynaecology, and pathology. 8 stations.

If a candidate fails or has excused absence, the following applies:

• A candidate having failed an exam or having excused absence, will be signed up for a resit with the same format as the ordinary examination. The resit will take place before the start of the next module.
• Exchange students having failed an exam or having excused absence have the option of a resit in Oslo.
• Programme students who do not pass the two examinations in Module 6 cannot proceed to Module 7. Programme students awaiting results from the resit examination(s)/postponed examination(s) may follow the teaching in Module 7 until the results are known, or, if applicable, until the result of an appeal is obtained.

No other calculators are allowed.

Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)

No examination support material allowed.

Illness or excused absence at the time of examinations/postponed examinations.

All students with a result Fail will automatically be signed up for a postponed examination

Students who wish to resit an examination in order to improve their grade, are given the opportunity at the next regular examination. Students who wish to retake an examination must register using the online form (nettskjema). The deadline is 1 September for examinations taking place in the autumn semester and 1 February for examinations taking place in the spring semester. An exemption from the deadline may be granted when examination results from resit/postponed examinations are published at a later date. Students concerned will be informed.

Information for programme students only:

In the event of a resit in order to improve the grade, the results will follow the current grading scale. As of resit autumn 2025, this will be pass/fail.

If candidates with letter grades A-E obtain a pass after a resit, but wish to retain A-E as their valid grade, this must be handled manually. Further information will be provided in the online form.

The examination must be retaken within completion of the following module, according to the regulations. A MED5600 examination with a result of Pass (A-E) cannot be repeated once a pass has been achieved for MED5700.
