Data Science for Lawyers

Students must fill one of these requirements:

• Passed 1st - 3rd year of the 5-years degree Master of Laws (Master i rettsvitenskap at UiO) (or exams that qualify for exemption for these) or
• Hold a 5-years Master’s degree in Laws (Master i rettsvitenskap at UiO) or equivalent.

You may apply for this course if you have been admitted to one of the following study programs at UIO: Rettsvitenskap, Information and Communication Technology Law (ICTL), and Forvaltningsinformatikk. The following student groups may also apply: students enrolled in one of the following three Law master's degree programs—Public International Law, Maritime Law, and Human Rights (with a minimum of 5 places in total available for the three programs)—as well as the Faculty of Law’s own exchange students (with a minimum of 5 places).

Nevertheless, the letter of motivation is crucial for the final allocation of study places if the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spots.

All students are required to meet the formal prerequisites.

Language of teaching for this course is English. Communication during lectures/seminars will be in English and Norwegian, and students may use learning resources in both Norwegian and English.

Programming is a practical skill that takes practice to develop. Therefore, this course will consist of group sessions as well as lectures. In the group sessions you can ask questions, get help with your assignments or just work on your assignments.

Attendance is voluntary for both the lectures and the group sessions.

Students are graded on the basis of a portfolio submission.

• An individual written paper ( max. 2000-3000 words per student) ca. 2/3 of the grade
• An individual oral presentation of the paper and an oral exam, ca. 1/3 of the grade

Students work throughout the semester and will receive a single grade in the subject based on the paper and and the oral exam.

Front page, contents page (optional) and bibliography are not included. If footnotes are used in the text (at the bottom of each page), they are included in the word limits mentioned above. 

Assignments/papers with text exceeding the word limit may be rejected.

You must familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to exam support materials, and the use of sources and citations. Previous exam papers and marking criteria

All available exam resources are allowed when answering this exam. Rules for source referencing are crucial for determining whether the use of resources is permitted. Your exam paper must be an independent work.

1. The use of artificial intelligence as an aid when answering this exam must comply with UiO’s guidelines for using AI, and ethical issues related to AI use should be considered.
2. AI use must be explained and/or documented. The more AI is used in developing the text, the greater the expectations for documentation and reflection on that use. Text generated by AI tools is not considered an academic source.
3. Cheating: Use of AI can be considered cheating if, for example, you give a false impression of independence, omit sources, or cite fictitious sources.

• Illness at exams / postponed exams
• Resitting an examination.
• There are special rules for resitting a passed examination in the master`s programme in Law.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
