UiO sin egen emnebeskrivelse — læringsutbytte, innhold og vurderingsform.
Teaching is an important skill including leadership, collaboration and human knowledge. In this course, you will develop your ability to facilitate student learning. Participants will discuss and explore principles of teaching and learning in higher education, and use constructive alignment to plan, deliver and evaluate teaching and learning activities.
Knowledge about teaching and learning is prerequisite for a career in higher education. Reflections around learning and development are relevant to mentoring and supporting members of a research team, and the ability to facilitate learning opportunities for new students is critical to contribute to the future of education and research in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
You will learn to plan learning outcomes and goals, evaluate forms of assessment, and select appropriate student-centered learning activities and methods to support student development in a cohesive way. You will learn to use assessment for learning, use writing and discussions to support deep learning and critical thinking skills for students, and reflect on the role of the learning environment and how to include diverse students in your teaching. Finally, you will learn how to document your competence for future job applications within or outside academia.
After completing this course, you are able to:
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
The course has limited intake capacity (25 participants). All applicants must have teaching duties in their PhD position and in the current semester. The applicants are further ranked by the following criteria:
All applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution mustapply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Developing as a teacher requires learning by doing. Hands-on experience and reflections on teaching in your own field of expertise is an important part of the learning outcomes in this course. After a five-day intensive course consisting of workshops and discussions, you will use what you have learned to gain practical experience through your teaching duty.
After planning and trying out teaching in your own field, we meet again to share experiences and connect these to relevant literature in order to develop further as teachers. The teaching concludes with a one-day workshop where you get feedback on your written reflections that will form the basis for your home exam. The home exam period is two weeks.
The course material includes research articles and websites. The course requires active participation from all participants during workshops and during the practical part of the course.
Attendance at the first day of the course is mandatory. Attendance at 80 percent of the course and approval of the teachable unit is required to be allowed to take the home exam.
Upon the attendance of five or fewer students, the course will be cancelled and the candidates will be offered a place in the course for the upcoming semester.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Two weeks after the final day of teaching, participants must submit a written home exam.
Approval of the teaching plan is required to be allowed to take the home exam.
