Master's Thesis in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies

Having completed the thesis the student will:

• be able to design and manage an independent research project.
• have a strengthened ability to write good prose and to structure a written composition.
• be able to assert their own expertise and apply it in an argumentative, source-critical and problem-orientated research and to acquaint it with various theoretical and methodological research approaches.

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

To be eligible for this course, you must be enrolled in one of the following master's programs:

• HFM2-VMNS

Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Supervision in connection with writing the master`s thesis is obligatory. In order to be assigned a supervisor, students must agree to and sign a supervision agreement for masters students enrolled in the Department. The Department appoints a supervisor and the supervision agreement will be sent to the student by the student advisor.

Each student is entitled to up to 9 hours of supervision. Some of the tuition can be given in groups.

In addition to supervision 3 double seminars will be held during the semester. Students must attend and actively take part in a minimum of 33% of seminars (1 seminar) in order to be able to hand in the thesis.

Students must register for tuition and the exam via Studentweb.

The master's thesis is submitted in the last semester after the other courses in the degree have been completed. The submission deadlines are June 1 in the spring semester and 15 December in the autumn semester.

An individual oral exam is held within 8 weeks after submission. A final grade is awarded based on the written thesis and the oral examination.

The assignment must be up to 50 pages (2,300 characters each without spaces). The assignment must be written in English or any of the Scandinavian Languages. The master's thesis is assessed with letter grades by an internal and an external examiner.

Before the final grading there will be an oral examination of approximately half an hour - a discussion between the student and two examiners about the thesis. The supervisor will not be a member of this panel. The thesis is assessed and graded by a subject teacher and an external sensor. The final grade will be given after this oral examination.
