Gender Studies Master's Thesis

Having completed the master¿s thesis, you can:

¿ carry out empirical research
¿ identify and handle the relationship between research question, theoretical perspective, research design and choice of method
¿ analyse a specific topic in an original and meaningful fashion
¿ demonstrate a mastery of relevant theory and/or literature
¿ write a scholarly treatise that encapsulates the approach and the results
¿ address questions related to gender according to scientific and academic standards
¿ carry out independent research on a gender related topic

Admission to the Master programme in Gender Studies and passed grades in all the compulsory courses:

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Teaching consists of individual academic supervision given over two semesters. Supervision is mandatory and you will meet regularly with you academic supervisor. Only students admitted to the course may receive supervision and sit for the examination.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, contingent on available capacity.

The thesis is to be completed and submitted by 15th of May or 15th of November.

The Master’s thesis should contain between 31000 and 45000 words.

After the thesis has been submitted, a Commission will be appointed to examine the thesis.

The Commission will give a provisional grade of the thesis. The student can choose whether they would like to be informed about the provisional grade ahead of the oral exam or if they want to wait for the final grade, which will be decided after the oral exam.

The oral exam will take place at the Centre. The Commission will consist of two examiners of whom at least one is an external examiner. The student should be prepared to answer questions about the thesis content and preparation. The exam will usually take 45-60 minutes. After the exam is completed, the Commission will determine a grade for the thesis, which will be given to the student at the end of the session.

No examination support material is allowed.

No special exam resources are allowed at the oral exam.

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

English, Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

You may request an explanation of your grades, and you may also appeal against your grades or make a complaint about formal examination errors. Read more about explanations and appeals.

If you have a disability or a health problem that entails significant inconvenience in an examination situation, you may be considered for special examination arrangements. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
