After completing this course, you should have acquired:

Knowledge about

• relevant educational policy documents and central topics for the bridging of the use of English outside school with English as a school subject in Norway
• relevant theory and research on adolescents’ voluntary use of English outside school
• how to bridge adolescents’ use of English outside school to the teaching and learning in the English classroom

Skills to

• analyse and discuss empirical research, and relevant theory related to the use of English in and outside school, and connect these to each other
• apply theoretical concepts related to the use of English outside school to classroom practice, and apply international research to the Norwegian context
• collect and/or analyse data on the bridging of English use in and outside school
• presenting knowledge from individual study

Competence to

• continuously develop your teacher professionalism in English as a school subject
• apply research-based knowledge in the development of your English teaching practices

The course offers seminars that include student activities, such as academic discussions, individual in-depth study and oral presentations.

Students are expected to meet prepared for teaching activities, and take responsibility for individual study of course reading. Participation in group discussions is a condition for developing a shared understanding of theory and research and acquiring the relevant competence to complete the course.

If there are fewer than 5 students signed up for the course, alternative teaching activities adjusted to the size of the group might be offered.

Course reading is set to approximately 650 pages.

Compulsory components:

• Draft term paper (2000 words).
• The students are also required to provide oral feedback to an assigned student paper.

The exam is a written term paper (3000 - 4000 words).

The obligatory term paper draft and feedback needs to be passed to be able to participate in the exam.

This course offers both postponed and resit examinations.

Students granted a valid absence are eligible to take a postponed examination.

Students who do not pass the exam are eligible to take a resit examination.

Postponed and resit examinations are normally held within three months of the ordinary examination.

Students who qualify for either a postponed or resit examination must contact the student administration to be registered.
