Mathematics 2: Calculus and linear algebra

Knowledge
You should know

• functions of one and several variables and optimization with or without constraints (introducing inequality constraints)
• integration and differential equations
• linear algebra in terms of vectors and matrices, with applications to and linear equation systems

Skills
You should be able to

• solve more sophisticated calculus problems than what is covered in ECON2200
• aggregate quantities using methods of integration, and analyze dynamic models formulated as differential equations.
• linearize nonlinear models
• formulate linear models in a compact notation, manipulate them in an efficient manner and solve linear equations algorithmically using the theory on linear algebra

Competence
This course should enable you to

• read and understand the notation and analyses of a wide class of models in the scientific literature , including multivariate models
• formulate and formalize a wider range of models than what is covered in ECON2200
• analyze such models in your own academic work, for example in analyses that are part of the master¿s thesis

Bachelor¿s degree in Economics, or equivalent.

Students enrolled in other Master || chr(38) ||#39;s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Lectures: 4 hours per week throughout the semester.

Seminars: 2 hours per week through parts of the semester.

Resources allowed: Open book examination where all printed and written resources, in addition to calculator, are allowed.

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam.

The Department of Economics has passed following resolution for ECON-courses: It will no longer be possible for candidates to register for an exam in a lower level course after having passed exams in intermediate and advanced level courses in the same subject area (also where there are no pre-requisites that apply to the intermediate course). Further information can be found here.

Students who might wish to retake the exam later, are not guaranteed that the course is ever repeated with a similar reading list, nor that the exam arrangement will be the same.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

An English equivalent of the Norwegian version is available:

(EMEA) K. Sydsæter and P. Hammond Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis, 4th edition, Pearson (2012) or 3rd edition (2008). The entire book, except Sections 10.5-10.8, Section 16.9, and Chapter 17. (You can also use the 2nd edition (from 2006), but be aware that problem numbers etc. may have changed. Also, the second edition contains answers only to odd-numbered problems.)

The following may be useful:

(FMEA) K. Sydsæter, P. Hammond, A. Seierstad, and A. Strøm Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis, 2nd edition, FT Prentice Hall (2008). Sections 5.1-5.4. These sections treat elementary first-order differential equations in somewhat more detail than Sections 9.8-9.9 in EMEA do. If you have an old (1st or 2nd) edition of EMEA, you will definitely need to look at FMEA. (You can also use the 1st edition from 2005. The first edition contains answers only to odd-numbered problems.)

If you have a disability or a health problem that entails significant inconvenience in an examination situation, you may be considered for special examination arrangements. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.

A student may sit this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do so in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit the exam.
