After completing this course, you
• can explain the need for high-throughput sequence analysis within molecular biology
• can perform bioinformatic analyses in a shell environment on a remote supercomputer
• can use basic programming and scripting to use and adapt existing analytical pipelines
• can use different biological databases for a range of applications
• can perform short read sequence alignment towards a reference genome
• can explain the basics of 3D genome organization and how to model this
• can perform exploratory high-throughput (RNAseq) data analyses in R
• can explain the basics of 3D protein folding and x-ray crystallography
This course is open to students studying biology, mathematics or computer science. Students must have at least 120 study points to apply. Students must have a basic understanding of biology/molecular biology at least corresponding to 10 university study points in molecular biology or similar.
The course might be relevant also for students without this background, but candidates should in this case contact the course coordinator before signing up.
Students admitted at UiO must apply for courses in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may apply to take this course as a single course student.

The courses BIOS-IN5410 and BIOS-IN9410 have joint admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc.If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally.
The course is given as five weeks intensive course that consists of:
It is only necessary to be physically present at the UiO campus for certain parts of the course.
An 80% attendance is mandatory for the lectures. You will lose your seat on the course if documentation for absence is not provided to the student administration [email protected] before the first lecture.
Compulsory assignments must be approved and compulsory attendance must be completed in order to sit for the exam.
Access to teaching:
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
4 day take home exam
Obligatory assignments must be completed and approved before the exam and in the same semester.
When writing your assignments make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for use of sources and citations. Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of attempted cheating.
An additional, limited, oral examination may be arranged in cases where this is necessary for the student evaluation.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: MBV-INF4410, MBV-INF9410, BIOS-IN9410
