Internship

An internship provides the student with the opportunity to apply anthropological skills in a real work environment. It provides the student with an enhanced understanding of how his/her largely theoretical competence acquired through academic study can be applied.

A master student`s experience with internship (in Norwegian).

You have to be enrolled in the master’s programme in Social Anthropology and must have completed ANTH4115 and ANTH4125.

Alternatively you must be enrolled in the master’s programme for Social Anthropology, and must have completed ANTH4010​, ANTH4020​, and ANTH4030​.

Students must be enrolled in the master’s programme in Social Anthropology.

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The internship takes place during the autumn semester and must be equivalent to six weeks full-time study. The internship may replace a 10-credit elective course in the study plan.

The Department of Social Anthropology (SAI) has limited administrative capacity to initiate contact between students and relevant institutions. Students must therefore explore and find internship options themselves. A contract between SAI, the relevant institution and the individual student that specify each party`s rights and obligations during the internship is required. The student is responsible for ensuring that the contract is signed by all parties before starting the internship.

The following administrative procedures apply to internships:

1. The contact person at the relevant institution contacts the SAI coordinator (course convenor/teacher) to express interest in drawing up an internship contract with SAI and named student, specifying the tasks for which the intern would be employed.

2. Two contracts are developed: One framework agreement between the internship institution and SAI, and one agreement between the internship institution and the student. In the latter agreement, details about the nature of the work, the time period and other relevant matters are specified. While SAI is not a direct party to the latter contract, SAI needs a copy even of this contract for our files.

3. To acquire study credits, the student must prepare a report, as detailed below under "Examination". The student must register for the course ANTH4710 in Studentweb.

Starting from Spring 2026, this course will switch its teaching and examination semester to the autumn. Therefore, the course will not be held in Spring 2026. The course will be held in Autumn 2026 and in subsequent autumn semesters.

The internship work must be equivalent to six weeks full-time study to be able to sit for the exam.

Exam:

You must submit a 6-8 page report, which should cover two aspects:

• A detailed description of the tasks performed during the internship
• A discussion on the practical use of the anthropological theories and perspectives studied during the master's programme as well as the extent of their applicability during the internship.
