Innhold
The master's thesis is based on independent research and writing on a topic either dealing with English literature or English linguistics. The topic of the thesis may be related to one of the courses in the master's programme. Alternative 1 thesis should have a length of approx. 30.000 words. The project is to be an analytical investigation of a literary or linguistic topic, involving a critical assessment of relevant sources. alternatively, students may choose an experimental linguistic topic, involving the collection and interpretation of a novel dataset.
Innhold
Masteroppgaven er et selvstendig arbeid om et emne innenfor enten engelskspråklig litteratur eller engelsk språk. Temaet for oppgaven bør fortrinnsvis knytte an til et av mastergradsemnene. Masteroppgaven innenfor Alternativ 1 vil normalt være på 20.000-25.000 ord (ca. 80 maskinskrevne sider).

Læringsutbytte
Gjennom arbeidet med masteroppgaven skal studentene lære å utforme problemstillinger, få øvelse i å bruke vitenskapelige arbeidsmetoder og gi et selvstendig bidrag til faget.
Forkunnskapskrav
EN-410 and EN-411 or the equivalent, and, in addition, 45 ECTS credits in English at master's level. 30 ECTS credits must be within the same area of specialization as the master's thesis (literary or linguistic).
Forkunnskapskrav
EN-400 eller tilsvarende, samt 45 studiepoeng i engelsk på mastergradsnivå. 30 studiepoeng må være innen samme spesialisering som masteroppgaven (litterær eller språklig). Ved litterær spesialisering må disse dessuten falle innenfor kategorien periodeemner.

Eksamen
Eksamenskrav: Før studentene kan begynne på masteroppgaven må alle emnene i første studieår være bestått. Masteroppgaven kan ikke leveres til sensur før alle emnene er bestått. Egen vurdering av masteroppgaven.
Gradert karakter. Muntlig mastergradseksamen arrangeres etter sensuren på masteroppgaven. I første del av muntlig eksamen skal kandidaten gi en kort presentasjon av argumentasjonen i masteroppgaven. Deretter deltar kandidaten i en diskusjon om oppgaven. Muntlig eksamen er vanligvis på omkring 45 minutter. Muntlig eksamen har justerende virkning på karakteren for masteroppgaven.
Eksamen
The master's thesis is marked separately and a graded assessment is given. After the thesis has been assessed, an oral examination is arranged. In the oral exam the candidate gives a short presentation of the argumentation of her/his master's thesis, followed by a discussion of the topic. Duration is usually 45 minutes. The oral exam may adjust the grade given for the thesis.

Studentevaluering
